2011 Stock Picks

I'm starting to invest long term in stocks this year. In previous years, I'm more on it in a short term basis.

5. San Miguel Corp. (SMC)

20. Semirara Coal Corp (SCC)

I am not a guru in stock investing. I'm just a common man watching the stock market, reading company's disclosures, financial statement and press releases. My basis for selecting the above stocks is their percieved future values, while the timing of entry would be based on PER and PBV.

Aside from my top 20 picks, I'm also watching the following stocks which would be included in my short term stocks portfolio, depending on movements and rumors:

1. FDC-Filinvest Devt Corp
2. IMI-Integrated Micro

PCSO Online Lottery: How to become an online agent?

One of the most queued place/booth is a Lottery booth. Seeing this, I become interested in putting up my own Lotto outlet. I made a research about it and here is what I found.

First, the hearsays and misconceptions:
• You need half a million pesos to become an agent.

You don’t have to raised this much. I think as little as P50,000.00 would do (depends on location, however. In Metro Manila and urban cities the minimum cost could be P100K). The P500K was an optional bond, you may put a bond, that way you will not be paying a sort-of annual insurance and this bond will also earn interest. You can get back your bond when you decided not be an agent anymore or opted to pay for the annual insurance premium.

• There is no more available slot.

This misconceptions or heard-on-somebody else information was on the internet 2 to 3 years ago, but if you look how every now and then new outlets are being built, you would know that that was not true.

• You need to have connection or bribe PCSO employee/officer to get one.

A friend of mine got an approval without bribing anyone.

So, how one become an Online Lottery Agent?

First: Fill-out and submit the On-Line Lottery Application Form (no downloadable form, you can get the form from PCSO District Office). The Application Form shall include the following attachments, sketch/Location Map of the proposed outlet site and Picture of the building of the proposed outlet site.

Vista Land & Lifescapes, Inc. stocks - 70% off

My prediction of upward movement of the stock market as mentioned in my previous post is yet to happen.
Reviewing Philippine Stock Market data for last weeks trading, I discovered that there are a lot of bargain stocks. Among the stocks that caught my attention was Vista Land & Lifescape, Inc. (VLL) which closed today at P1.16, is trading at a discount of almost 70% (BV is P3.76)

I will post a buy to this stocks and will hold it for long-term.

Although, the company:
  • Posted net income is lower than the previous period by P500M
  • Involvement of its perceived owner Sen. Villar to the Budget brouhaha
  • Real property sector growth for the near future is seen to slow down due to the global financial crisis re: the OFW market
The bright prospect overshadowed the perceived downside:
  • Trading at 70% discount
  • Positive Retained Earning - P4.5B
  • Posted a net income for the semester - P1.5B
  • Diversified real property products, market and location
  • Low D/E ratio of 32%
  • Paying dividend (latest was April 2008 @ P0.067/share)
  • Supports its stock price thru buy-backs

Stock Market Crash=Opportunity

Today, the stock market worldwide crashed to record lows, Dow Jones dropped more than 20% in a week time. I see the reason of this is more of panic and fear rather than of logic.

This signals a good buying opportunity, may it be for short or long term. The stock market, as fear and panic died down, which I think in just a matter of days, will be going to correct to, also, more than 20%.

Investors will come to their senses. Soon people will have a second look and see bright prospects to the future effect of the US bail-out plan and interest rate cuts.

But, just a word of caution, proceed with extreme care. Ideally, one should buy only stocks of companies with:
  • Strong/good fundamentals - low Price-to earning (PE) ratio (10 and below) and Price-to-book Value (PVB) (below 0.80); Consider also if with positive Retained Earnings account and if possible low (below 1:1) debt-to-equity ratio

  • Good prospects - no or with minimal (below 1%) exposures to bankrupt companies; impact/effect of recession to its operation, in case it materialized, will be minimal, e.g., its products are basic necessities/services (utilities, communication, medicine, medical services, food, etc.). Since oil prices are currently on a decline - transportation sector have a good prospect for now, although will be affected by lesser demand re: product movements. While electronics, properties, leisure, manufacturing, and consumer/retailers will have a hard time.

In my opinion, though, the sell-off for the past day, sets for a rebound even without considering the above guide. In the Philippines, as of today, good stocks to buy are:

  • PLDT (TEL) - good fundamentals, actively traded - can be for short or long trading (Closing Price (CP) - P2,245.00)

  • Globe (GLO) - has good fundaments, actively traded - for long term (CP-P930.00)

  • Philodrill (OV) - this an oil exploration and drilling company. Although fundamentals of this company are not good - i mean, PVB is at high of 2.68 and PE ratio is at 120, its prospects are very good - another oil find in Palawan seas. It previous find is now producing oil. Its production volume is equivalent to 6% of the country's oil demand. This stock is for long term. Another bonus is its stock rights offer (1 for every 4 shares at P0.01) with an ex-date of October 13, 2008. (CP-P0.024)

  • Other good stocks with good fundamentals are: Alliance Global (AGI), Megaworld Properties (MEG), Filinvest Land (FLI), DMC Holdings (DMC), San Miguel Corp. (SMC), Ayala Corp. (AC), and Philix Mining (PX).
I'm buying on Moday.

7 ways to become rich

There are many ways to become rich, but these steps are just products of my research and experiences.

1. Believe You Can Be Rich

First, you have to believe that you can be rich. You have to believe that you have the capacity and the ability to achieve financial wealth. All endeavors should start in your belief that you are on your way of gaining much wealth. As the saying goes, “What your mind can conceive your body can achieve,” so believe first, then you will see.

2. Exert an Effort to Find Ways

You can never achieve something just by imagining, you have to do something. Becoming Rich is a journey, one author says, so there must be steps and ways to fulfill our dreams. So, don't just wait and imagine, find ways!

3. Learn From the Experts

It is a source of encouragement to know people how they have succeeded in their quest for wealth. We can gain ideas from their experiences. So, it's good to read Biographies of Business men who have become rich. And learn from them.

4. Invest Your Savings

There can never be returns with out investing something. First you have to save from your earnings, and then invest those savings to earn even more. There are also many ways to invest. You can put up your own business or buy shares from stock market.

5. Enter Into a Business

By entering into a business, you become an entrepreneur. You then become your own boss! I hope you don't plan to be an employee for the rest of your life. You can start a small business even while you are still working. Find your interests, maybe you can begin with that. Most of the wealthy people are those who are in business.

6. Value Time as an Investment

Don't ever waste your time. Time is gold, so it is precious, use time wisely. If you don't have anything to do, try to read good books or anything that has to do with improving yourself. There are Magazines and books that deal with starting a business. You can learn from them.

7. Enjoy Your Life of Being Rich

“Health is Wealth”, so a healthy wealth is that something you can enjoy. You can enjoy your life of being rich when you know you haven't abuse someone in order to gain that wealth. You can enjoy also when you know you have helped someone achieve to goals of life. So then, let it be your ultimate goal in life is to become happy, especially when you have become Rich.
